Glossary of Terms
Acute Cardiac Ischemia Time-Insensitive Predictive Instrument (ACI-TIPI) - A diagnostic tool available on the ECG machine that uses the ECG measurements, as well as the patient’s age, gender and chief complaint to predict the probability that a patient has acute cardiac ischemia.

Acute Coronary Syndrome - Term used to cover clinical presentations that include unstable angina, non–ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI), and ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).

Acute Coronary Ischemia - Chest pain due to insufficient blood supply to the heart muscle that results from coronary artery disease (also called coronary heart disease).

Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) - Commonly known as a heart attack.  Term used when blood is unable to reach the heart muscle thus leading to death or damage of the myocardial cells.

Angina - Chest pain or discomfort that occurs when heart muscle does not get enough blood.

Angioplasty - Insertion of a balloon-tipped catheter to unblock a blood vessel.

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) - When the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle (coronary arteries) become hardened and narrowed due to the buildup of plaque on the inner walls or lining of the arteries (atherosclerosis), blood flow to the heart is reduced.

Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) - A test that measures the electrical activity of the heartbeat.

GIK - Intravenous solution of Glucose-Insulin-Potassium.

Heart Attack - When a blood clot suddenly cuts off most or all blood supply to part of the heart.

Heart Failure - A condition where the heart cannot pump enough blood throughout the body.

IMMEDIATE Trial - Immediate Myocardial Metabolic Enhancement During Initial Assessment and Treatment in Emergency Care

Ischemia - Insufficient supply of blood to an organ due to a blocked artery.

Myocardium - Muscle tissue of the heart.

Reperfusion - Restoring blood flow to an organ or tissue that has had its blood supply cut off.

ST Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) -  ECG measurement for AMI.

Thrombolytic Predictive Instrument (TPI) - An ECG-based diagnostic tool that identifies patients with ST-elevation Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) for immediate reperfusion therapy.

Thrombolytic Therapy - The use of drugs to break up or dissolve blood clots.
